Reflecting on National Mentoring Month, Powering Chicago’s celebration of National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) demonstrates how structured mentorship programs create pathways to successful careers in the electrical trades.

From its inaugural apprenticeship challenge in 2021 to today’s comprehensive STEM competitions, Powering Chicago’s commitment to mentorship continues to evolve. 

“What we’re trying to do here is show our apprentices how important they are to us and how they affect the future of the unionized electrical industry,” explains Gene Kent, Director of the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute (IN-Tech).

This commitment was particularly evident during the 2023 National Apprenticeship Week, where IN-Tech hosted an impressive STEM Competition that brought together 200 students from 20 schools across Cook County. The competition challenged participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, demonstrating the practical application of mentorship in action.

Beyond Traditional Training

“Apprenticeships serve as a bridge to economic resurgence, create progress in racial and gender equity, build pathways to high-quality careers, and champion empowerment for all Chicago’s communities,” says Elbert Walters III, Executive Director of Powering Chicago. 

The IBEW Local 134 apprenticeship program at IN-Tech goes beyond traditional training by incorporating:

  • Hands-on experience with cutting-edge renewable energy technology
  • Real-world problem-solving challenges
  • Comprehensive technical education
  • Industry-specific skill development
  • Career pathway guidance
  • Encourages collaboration and team building among students

Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders

The impact of quality mentorship is evident in the program’s evolution. In 2024, the STEM competition has expanded to include 53 teams from across Cook County and greater Chicagoland, with students designing and constructing advanced solar charging stations that align with current infrastructure initiatives.

“This competition showcases how modern electrical work combines technical expertise with innovative problem-solving. We’re preparing students for careers that will shape our clean energy future,” Walters noted.
