Electrical Safety in Construction: A Focus for Safety Week

Each year, Construction Safety Week is a week to celebrate and recognize Powering Chicago members’ year-round commitment to fostering a culture of safety in the electrical construction industry. This annual event serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to prioritize the well-being of every worker on every job site.

The Importance of Construction Safety

Construction safety is a fundamental aspect of our industry’s success and sustainability. In 2022, the construction sector reported approximately 195,600 nonfatal injuries and 5,486 fatal work injuries. These statistics underscore the critical need for ongoing safety initiatives and education.

Electrical Safety: A Primary Concern

For electrical contractors, safety takes on an even more significant role. Between 2011 and 2021, 1,648 deaths resulted from occupational exposure to electrical hazards. As leaders in electrical construction, Powering Chicago’s qualified member electrical contractors are dedicated to reducing these risks in Chicagoland through comprehensive training and unwavering adherence to safety protocols.

Building a Culture of Safety

Powering Chicago’s mission is to invest in better construction, better careers, and better communities.

We believe that a strong safety culture is built on several key pillars:

  1. Comprehensive Training: Our IBEW Local 134 electricians undergo rigorous training, including a five-year accredited apprenticeship program that emphasizes safety at every step.
  2. Continuous Education: We ensure our members stay updated on the latest safety standards and code regulations in Cook County.
  3. Empowering Workers: We encourage every individual on our job sites to speak up about potential risks and take proactive measures to prevent accidents.
  4. Mental Health Awareness: Recognizing the importance of mental well-being in overall safety, we provide resources and support for our workers’ mental health.

Safety Beyond the Job Site

At Powering Chicago, we understand that the impact of our safety practices extends far beyond the construction site. Safe work practices protect not only our workers but also their families and the communities we serve. By prioritizing safety, we contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of the Chicagoland area.

Join Us in Championing Safety

As we observe Construction Safety Week, we invite all stakeholders in the construction industry—from municipality owners to property managers—to join us in reinforcing the importance of safety. Together, we can create a safer, more resilient industry that continues to build and power our communities for generations to come.
